If you've ever read a post here on Reign before, you may have noticed that I tend to get a bit riled up about the media messages being sent to women and girls here in America. Sometimes as I'm furiously typing, giving myself finger cramps and flirting with carpal tunnel, I think to myself "Dammit! Am I the only one who cares about this stuff? I feel like I'm typing and ranting and no one even cares!!"
THEN LO & BEHOLD... A BEACON OF LIGHT SHINES DOWN FROM THE HEAVENS!
America the Beautiful is socially probing documentary which explores the question, "Does American have an unhealthy obsessions with beauty?" Filmmaker Darryl Roberts journeys into the psyche of celebrities like Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson, athletes like Reggie Theus, industry professionals such as Jill Ishkanian from "US Weekly", Ted Casablanca from the "E! Channel" and the American citizenry to determine the roots of this superficial obsession." -- AmericaTheBeautiful.com
This film will be opening here in NYC on August 1st. Reviews like New Moon Founder Nancy Gruver's and film critic Roger Ebert's are just a tiny example of the praise this documentary is receiving. I'm pretty much already in line. I'll be bringing my 14-year-old daughter and as many of her friends as I can hunt down to the show. I think it will be a real eye-opener for them.
All you metro NY area Mamas will definitely want to check this out. Mamas in other areas, ATB is making the rounds. Check the film website to see if it will be coming to a theater near you.

Wow, what a great looking movie! Thanks for the heads-up. They have not currently scheduled a visit to Austin, but I just e-mailed them, and hope they will!
I know. I'm really looking forward to the seeing it and will be sure to blog about it afterwards to fill you in. Hopefully it will make it's way to Austin or somewhere nearby sooner or later.
I've been waiting for this one too, as I LOVED the video clip and site. Let me know if it holds up, as it's SO needed. I'd pinged the producer awhile back about adding them to our Shaping Youth film fest, will keep you posted...
Also, have you seen 'American Teen' the documentary yet?
Got to meet the cast and bring my tween at the Ypulse mashup and it was VERY well done...Think Breakfast Club/with a Hoosiers twist...could be a real break out film in this genre, a la Sundance. Even made it into Time mag this week...see it if you can; highly recommend.
p.s. And of course, Jean Kilbourne's 'So Sexy So Soon' book is out now too!
How's the Ruby Booker review for Shaping Youth shaping up?
ttys...Amy
Caught ATB on the 1st of August and absolutely loved it!! Got a treat at the end of the movie: the director and the young woman whose modeling experience was documented in the movie had a little Q&A session. VERY cool!
I will definitely be checking out American Teen.
And speaking of Ruby Booker, I picked up a couple of the books today. While I was at the bookstore I thought I'd pick up the Jean Kilbourne book, too. For some reason they didn't have it :-( I picked up Ariel Levy's Female Chauvinst Pigs instead since I've been wanting to read it.
So anyhoo, I say all this to say I will be whipping out the Ruby Booker review for Shaping Youth this week. I'm diving in as I type.
